N-Space Compression

"N-space compression" describes a family of technologies that have been combined together to create a single technology. Employed primarily by the Bonobians, the technology creates a 'pocket' region of space-time accessible via quantum portal.

How it works

An n-space pocket universe is a region of folded space that's been 'disconnected' from observable space. Think of it like a drawstring bag, only the material of the bag is the fabric of space. The drawstring is a superstring tether that closes off the bag or holds it open, connecting the bag to its access point. The form an access point takes is that of a two-dimensional, unbroken loop of superconducting material. The area contained within the bounds of that loop is the area that will form the n-space gate, though the loop can be of any shape and composition. (the most traditional forms are circles and rectangles, simple polygons, but any continuous two-dimensional polygon will do.) Each superconducting ring maintains a 'keychain' of superstring tethers to its associated pockets after the setup process, but these keys can be added and subtracted as one pleases. This allows for multiple gates to access a single pocket, or maintain secure access to one pocket from a single location. Tuning the frequency of the portal requires editing fundamental properties of the metal, quantum resonance frequencies, to bring it into 'tune' with it's superstring tether. Access rings without control units to alter these frequencies can be thought of as 'static' gates, whereas ones with the ability to alter themselves to access multiple pockets can be thought of as 'dynamic' gates. Two gates opened in the same pocket, adjacent to one another, will form a continuous portal through which objects can pass through instantly, like walking through a door, to two completely different locations. (those familiar with farcaster portals would find n-space gates to be very similar in their manner of operation.)

How do you make it work?

ICly, n-space compression rings can be manufactured and configured intuitively for personal use alone or incorporated into provided objects, by those with little or no mechanical or scientific knowledge. The workshop on the Orion provides all of the neccessary facilities and instructions for creating simple n-space devices.

Example Applications

OOC notes

OOCly, n-space compression rings are really simple. A single gate with nothing on the other side, just goes into a pocket universe that's infinitely big. More advanced models of gate can 'toggle' between different universes like cells. Two gates, linked together, will act like a door to someplace else. N-space compression rings can be of any size, though if something really big goes into a big portal, and tries to come out a little one, it won't go through. However, small connectors can be coupled to much larger machines contained within pocket universes, allowing a big honking HappyWave machine the size of a building to have an emitter the size of a coffee mug that you could carry around with you. Bonobians licenced n-space technology freely for nonviolent usage, though use in any potentially violent or harmful technology (weapons applications, for one) requires somewhat more paperwork.

SMAC

[Yes, SMAC fans, this is where the name comes from.] I worked it somewhat differently, however; that requires something be somewhere else, and is just brought to where it needs to be, when it needs to be. This is rather different.

Feel free to add anything.
