The Cabaret. Dark, decadent, melodramatic, tragic, sexy. Crumbling walls, lurid greasepaint, fierce and sexy performances, torrid backstage dramas. It's every tragic European cabaret from stage, screen and literature.
...but, uh, transfigured to make it science fictiony, of course.
Little skulking rattish creatures maintain the place, run the flies, and keep it from collapsing. They probably MST3K all the performances and fuck in the corners too.
It's probably in Downbottom: hedonistic excess meets entropic collapse.
It's just a mental 'doodle' at this point. There's lots of questions still remaining, such as:
What's the draw? High art? Are there no-holds-barred sex shows? If so, what's to distinguish it from anywhere else in Bottom? If not, what's the relationship of the Cabaret to the rest of its neighbourhood?
In other words, how could it fit into Puzzlebox as a whole? What changes when you plop the Moulin Rouge into a post-everything world?
Moulin Rouge (and particularly the overripe, decadent, over-the-top version in Baz Luhrmann's film). Cabaret. Hedwig. [Cabaret Voltaire], perhaps?
