Manifesting as a cloud of pixels, XOR is something akin to a weakly godlike AI customer service representative, acting as an intermediary between the sentients that inhabit Puzzlebox and whatever unknowable mind directs the Puzzlebox itself.
XOR is programmed to be impartially helpful, the perfect "public servant", having no apparent interests or goals of xer own. Nonetheless, many sentients have attempted for various reasons to destroy XOR, always unsuccessfully. It seems that the processing units that XOR runs on are as widely and redundantly distributed as the instantiator and backup systems. (See
