Animism can be taken to the level of religion, though that's not necessary. Totemism is a form of animism, and many furries follow personal totems.
What happens when such a spirit awakens? What happens when a group of them awaken together?
We've already seen at least two characters like this: a living skyscraper full of cooperating inhabitants, and an intelligent forest with internal life organized to produce thought and action.
