Blip says, "Octopus is the new black!"

Sumire says "Spheres must be the new new black."

Blip looks like a small teenage girl, dressed in a bright red bikini top; at least, that's what she looks like from the hips up. Her lower body is a vaugely bell-shaped mauve mass of eight tentacles, the underside of each lined with strong, round suckers. Octopus seems to be the fashion of the day.

Blip page-poses, "Blip slips you a gift with her tentacle before you take off. An octopus-shaped hat, with tentacles dangling down around your face, just so that when the octopus fashion fad really takes off, you're not left scrambling from the peer pressure!" to Apogee

: Woops! Blip used a personal pronoun for itself instead of the more impersonal "it" in that page, how embarrassing! --Blip

Blip holds its hands out and concentrates, instantiating a mauve octopus-shaped hat complete with little round cloth suckers on the tentacles that hang down from the sides. The hat drops into Blip's hands.

Blip carefully places the octopus hat on System's head.

Blip says, "There! You look gorgeous."

System giggles. "How silly, Blip."
Blip is a bouncing ball of black and white rubber. There's a flat panel in the middle of it, with a small graphical and text representation of whatever emotion it's feeling at the time. Right now, it's feeling: [ bouncy ]

Blip looks over Clockwork. "Hello there! You look great today! With one exception. You need a hat."

Clockwork pauses, to consider his attire, having been notified of his lack. He nods slowly in agreement, thinking that at the time of when he wrote..errr stole this body, he should of written..err taken the man's hat.

Sumire says, "Fortunately, Blip is prepared to rectify that oversight."

Clockwork wears octopi upon his head. He adjusts the tentacles for a moment, then nods with approval. "Back in black."

Sumire says, "Mauve, actually. Mauve octopus is apparently the new black."
You find yourself looking at a rather unremarkable object... a rubber ball. Around a foot in diameter, it's a featureless of sphere of black rubber, with no distinguishing markings... not even a seam from where it was cast. Sometimes when you look, it just sits still... but at others, you can see it bouncing around, occasionally bouncing off at unusual or even impossible angles for a normal rubber ball... and sometimes, it just seems to float through the air! Hardly a normal rubber ball... but does such a thing even exist in the Mess?

Blip asks, "Do you need hats? I am giving out hats. So that you won't be left out when the Octopus Is The New Black fad washes over everything."

( And then the twins stop, glance at each other, and look horribly confused. )

Blip looks back. "It's the latest fashion fad! Octopus Is The New Black!" It indicates its lower body. "See? All the cool kids will be wearing octopus soon."

Blip says, "Here, let me help."

Trans raises an eyebrow. "That's...certainly interesting."

"He had a bad experience with tentacles once." Cend grins. "Don't mind him."

Blip holds out its hands and starts to concentrate. It instantiates two mauve octopus hats. Bulbous on the top, with eight tentacles that hang down the back, the sides, and around the face. The tentacles are cloth and have little lavender circles representing suckers. The hats fall into Blip's arms.

Blip says, "Here you go. Don't worry, these won't hurt."

Blip hands one hat to Trans and another to Cend, each sized about right. "There you go. Now when all the other folks start wearing octopus, you can just put on your hat and be safe."

Trancend accept the gifts, somewhat warily. "And you say this is the next big thing..?"

Blip nods to both. "Oh, definitely! Why, some of the most fashionable people are already wearing them! System, for example! And even Clockwork!"

"We've, uh..." "Well, never been much for fashion." The twins shrug. "Clothes only get in the way, y'know?"

Blip nods. "Well, just keep them around for an emergency! You might want to put them behind a panel that says 'in case of octopus fad, break glass.' I've gotta go now, it was nice meeting you!"

Trancend blink a few times each. "Oh...kay."
Floating in mid air is what seems to be a large bubble, about a metre in diameter, but matt black in colouration. Only the faintest of sheens can be seen from its surface, which occasionally shimmers as the sphere creates a noise, its skin vibrating the air around it. There seem to be no obvious sensory apparatus or appendages of any sort.
