Ataxia [a·tax·i·a] - From the Greek, Ataxia, disorder. Antonym of Ataxis, meaning order. In modern terms, a synonym for Chaos, usually referring to the loss of coordinating motor control.

In Puzzlebox, Ataxia is the name of a mature anthropomorphic female black backed jackal with ordering and disordering properties. She is dualistic in nature, possessing two opposite forms, which themselves hold two opposite characteristics internally and externally.

Quick Physical Descriptions

Black Backed Jackal - A form biological in composition. While being perfectly ordered internally, to the extent that she actually runs a bit cooler than a normal individual, her touch disorders particles around her. She is, in effect, a Chaos Engine, exchanging the disorder inside of her with the order around her. In this Static form she is rather tall, and seems to prefer dress styles from the 1920s, or similar themes from the era to accentuate an angular, geometric style her species fits well. She is bereft of colour, seeming to show up as almost pure gray scale - except for her eyes, showing a very dull blue, and anything internal.

Shadow-Jackal - An abiological form, composed of embryonic pre-matter, particles so disordered that while they have the potential to form atoms and more complex structures, they remain lone protons, electrons, neutrons, and the like, or the component parts of the same. Physically, she appears as an tenebrous inky black mass in the shape of a jackal, usually habitually bent in a feral posture. Even so bent, she stands perhaps ten feet tall - if she straightens out, a few feet more. Her dull blue eyes show up better, and her teeth, long spikes in this form, show up as well - but that's it, all light, sound, and radiation go unreflected when they touch her. She is afflicted with Klazomania in this form, which essentially means that anything and everything she says comes out as a shout, a yell, or if excited, an outright scream. This form fits her name properly, except that all that she touches is ordered, exchanging the chaotic elements in them for any rising order in herself. She thus is a Stasis Engine.

Properties

Klazomania - When in biological beings, a disorder which places the individual prone to shouting everything they say, if not constantly doing so. For Ataxia, Klazomania onsets when she is abiological, a Shadow Jackal, and thus cannot be considered entirely the same. Nevertheless, the effects are consistant with the term - she shouts, screams, and otherwise is painfully loud when she speaks in this form. It further fits with her name, as in modern terms, it refers to the loss of coordinating motor control, including speech.

Chaos Engine - An instrument which increases entropy under its influence. Ataxia conforms to this reality when she is a biological Black Backed Jackal. All that she touches is brought under an entrophic influence. In her immediate vicinity, complex particles in the air break down. Her touch spreads the influence, strongest at point of contact but permeating the whole of an object eventually. She increases probability in the direction of breakdown, decomposition, disorder. However, while a Chaos Engine, her physical form is perfectly ordered, as if under the influence of a Stasis Engine. Examples of her effect: Lifting a coffee cup only to have the handle break. Perfectly good doors squeaking when opened. Monitors flickering, displays warping when touched or neared.

Stasis Engine - Also, Static Engine. An instrument which decreases entropy under its influence. Ataxia conforms to this reality when she is an abiological Shadow Jackal. All that she touches is brought under a static influence. Particles around her stay as they are, and tend to work with increased efficency. Her touch spreads the influence, strongest at point of contact but permeating the whole of an object eventually. She increases probability in the direction of order, regularity, harmony, and stasis. However, while a Stasis Engine, her physical form is completely disordered, composed not even of matter but of embryonic pre matter - particles that could form together to become atoms and complex structures, but are held apart by chaotic effect. She is under the pervading effect of a Chaos Engine. Examples of her effect: A squeaky door no longer making any noise while opened, flicker in a monitor disappearing, the cooling of objects around her.

Both Stasis and Chaos Engine forms exchange Chaos or Order for one another. They do not require a minimum input, but will progressively leech on either. Chaos Engine orders Ataxia's form by stealing ordering forces from the external world. Stasis Engine keeps Ataxia's form disordered by giving ordering forces to the eternal world.
